Introduction

Variety, nutrition, and balance are the criteria that the St. George’s Food Service Department embraces to ensure that our students are well-fed. Our onsite Red Seal certified chefs create our menus and prepare everything on site for our St. George’s boys and community. They serve high-quality meals while using fresh, sustainable, and local ingredients as much as possible.

Various programs are offered at both campuses, including meal programs for Senior and Junior School students, a meal program for Boarding students, and the Senior School Saints Café, a kiosk for students to purchase snacks and refreshments.

Lunch Programs

If you have already signed up for the Lunch Program during the school enrollment process in March/April 2023, you are already registered for the
2023–24 Meal Program and are not required to take any action.

  • Junior School Lunch Program

    Primary Lunch Program — Kindergarten to Grade 3:
     
    Kindergarten–Grade 3 students are able to access the Meal Program with our Classroom Delivered Box Lunch Program. Students can enjoy their meals with our sustainable program using reusable lunch boxes and real steel cutlery. Our Food Services Team will deliver the lunch boxes and cutlery to students’ classroomsThe Primary Menu has been crafted so the boys don’t need to use a fork and knife to enjoy their meals. Students on the Meal Program will get their lunch boxes from the designated area close to their classrooms. After lunch, the boys will return their box to the same area where the Food Services Team will collect the boxes for cleaning. 

    K– Grade 3 students have TWO options for menus:

    Option 1 — Primary K-3 Menu:
    This menu is created by our chefs specifically for this age bracket, serving nutritious foods that are familiar to kids. These meals do not require cutlery to ensure that every boy can enjoy their meal without any hassle between classes.

    This Lunch Menu include a variety of nutritious options such as: Turkey Snack Box: Sliced Turkey, Marble Cheese, Hummus & WW Pita Triangles, Fresh Grapes, Carrot Sticks, or Chef Jeff’s Chicken Noodle Soup with Mini Pretzel Roll, a side of seasoned cold Edamame, and Fresh Orange Wedges.

    Option 2 — Regular 4-12 Menu:
    The Regular Menu is the standard option for all Grade 4–12 students, as well as Staff and Faculty. This menu may require the use of a fork and knife. This menu includes options such as Baked BC Teriyaki Salmon Fillet with Quinoa and Rice Pilaf with Roasted Vegetables, or Roasted Honey Rosemary Pork Loin with Roasted Parsley Potatoes and Baby Carrots.     Grades 4–7 Lunch Program:

    Grades 4–7 enrollment in our Lunch Program will default to the Dining Room Program, where the boys can enjoy a community lunch with their fellow students, teachers, and staff in our beautiful Dining Hall. When the boys first arrive in the Dining Room, they will be assigned their seat for the year, and will find their family style food platters waiting for them.  Any boys, staff, or faculty with a registered dietary restriction is invited to come up to the main kitchen server to get their meal.
      
    Grades 4–7 also have the option to eat in their classrooms with the Gr. 4–7 Boxed Lunch Program if they do not want to eat in the Dining Hall. Please note that the procedures for this service have changed this year. Students are able to enjoy their sustainable Meal Program using reusable lunch boxes and real steel cutlery. Students on the Meal Program will get their lunch box from a designated area on the first floor. After lunch, the boys will return their box to their designated drop off area. Then the Food Services Team will collect the boxes for cleaning.

    General Meal Program Information for 2023–24
     
    WATER: All students are encouraged to bring their water bottles to school daily. Students have access to filtered water stations that can be found on each floor of the School.
     
    ALLERGIES AND DIETARY CONCERNS: Please ensure that the Food Services Team and the Nursing Department are aware of any dietary restrictions or food allergies prior to September. All dietary changes must be communicated to the Food Services Department by filling out the Meal Program Order Form below.

    ENROLLMENT/CANCELLATIONS:
    Enrollment for the Meal Program is done at the beginning of every term. Cancellations should be requested at  the beginning and end of every term, unless there is an approved reason.

  • Senior School Lunch Program

    Students who wish to participate in the Meal Program will receive their lunch in McLean Hall during their scheduled lunch period.

    Students that are NOT on the program also have access to meals if they forgot their lunch, or if they are interested in the daily menu. This menu is posted on the School Website, so students can regularly check to see what is available each week. They can simply swipe their ID card and it will charge them for an “Occasional Meal” at the cost of $13.75.

    All students must have their ID card at every lunch period in order to access the Meal Program. If they have lost their ID card, they must contact the IT Department to re-issue another one.

    For any dietary restrictions or special diets, we will have a dedicated station on the Northeast corner station of McLean Hall.

    Please note that the times are subject to change at this time.The final lunch timeline will be confirmed in September by your Head of Grades.

    Senior School Meal Plan Includes:
    • Access To Fruit Baskets: Hand fruits such as apples, bananas, pears, kiwis, oranges etc.

    • Beverages: Ice water, 2% Milk, or the featured freshly made infused water of the day  (i.e. watermelon & mint, orange & ginger, strawberry & cucumber etc.),  or all three if he wishes.

    • Entree Of The Day: We provide a Regular Menu, (no restrictions) as well as a special diets station that includes  options for Vegetarian diet, Vegan diet, Gluten–Free diet, and Plain Lean Protein offerings.

    • Associated Condiments: On pasta day, we  offer condiments such as chilis, parmesan, or nutritional yeast. The Asian-style noodle bowl includes options such as green onions, sesame seeds, soy sauce etc.

    • Full Salad Bar: Consists of a variety of leaf lettuces with assorted toppings, including  daily plain meat proteins,  plain vegan/gluten free proteins, Chef Aaron’s homemade dressings, commercial dressings, and fresh homemade composed salads.  Remember to look out for the St. George’s School Sprouts Club produce from either the outdoor gardens or Sodexo’s indoor ZipGrow garden located inside McLean Hall.

    • Spice Bar: Enhance your foods to your liking, with spices like chilli flakes, curry powder, italian herbs, sesame seeds, seasoning salts, Cajun seasoning, garlic seasoning,  nutritional yeast, hemp seeds, assorted hot sauces, soy sauce, ketchup, etc.

    • Soup Bar: Gourmet Soup of the day, made fresh daily from scratch.
    • Featured Dessert Of The Day: For healthy school guidelines, we usually offer fruit Monday throughThursday, and also offer a treat on Fridays.
    Powering Performance Program

    To help students identify their own personal nutritional goals, this will be our third year where we're offering our Food Program, Powering Performance. Powering Performance is a program to help the boys look for, and identify with the foods that they are eating. This program tailors to the boys’ personal needs, with these four pillars in mind:

     
    Strengthen (Red Icon):  For boys who like to work out, or who are a part of an Athletics Program.

    Recover (Dark Green Icon): For boys who have just endured a hard competition, exam, physical workout, marathon, or other strenuous activities, and need their bodies to bounce back.

    Focus (Light Green Icon): For boys who are participating in activities that require mental strength such as band, math club, debate, M.U.N, art etc.

    Sustain (Yellow Icon): These are foods that will energize the boys throughout the day so they don't feel that afternoon lull that makes them want to take a nap.

  • Boarding Meal Program

    Boarding students will receive three hot meals per weekday, as well as plenty of generous snacks in-between activities. Their Harker Hall floor kitchenettes are constantly stocked with plenty of food and snacks to satisfy any of their dietary needs throughout the day. Snacks range from homemade Asian-style baos, fresh baked goods, and freshly-cut fruit platters.

    On weekends, boarders can indulge in a brunch buffet that offers a variety of items, such as made-to-order omelettes, or the build-your-own Belgian waffle bar.

    Every other month, a Formal Dinner Banquet will be organised where the boys will come to dinner dressed in their uniforms, and will be treated to a night of community dining with a delicious buffet of banquet style food.
  • Saints Café

     The Saints Café is not your average food kiosk. The Saints Café offers a wide variety of snacks and drinks. From traditional baked goods and beverages to homemade salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and even special entrees of the day — the Saints Café has it all!! Try our famous homemade Asian-style tea eggs, homemade passion fruit popping boba tea, homemade coconut vegan chia pudding, or brown rice Onigiri.

    You asked for it, and now we have it!

    The Saints Café now offers online ordering! In order to avoid crowds and line ups, bypass the line by pre-ordering your snacks on our Catertrax online ordering system. 

    Note: Cut-off times are in place to allow our staff the proper time to get your order ready. You must present your ID as proof of purchase to pick up your order.

  • I cannot remember if I enrolled my son in the meal program during the School Enrollment process. How do I find out if I did or not?

    You will receive communication that you have enrolled in the program by September 1st. If you are unsure, please fill out the Junior School or Senior School lunch program form.
  • I forgot to pack my son a lunch today. Help! What should I do?

    If your son is at the Junior School, please call 604-222-5805 before 10:00 am, and the kitchen will assist you by providing lunch for your son. The Occasional Meal charge is $13.75 per meal.

    If your son is at the Senior School, he can simply swipe his ID card to give him access to the meal plan for a charge of $13.75. This will include a variety of items such as fresh fruit baskets, a featured salad, or home-made soup of the day, a hot entrée of the day with condiment sides, a daily dessert (usually fruit from Monday to Thursday, Fridays is a treat), and a selection of fresh-made, daily infused water, ice water, or milk.
     



  • I heard we get the same menu as some other Sodexo sites and that our food is all pre-packages and frozen. Is this true?

    No. Executive Chef Jeffery Hunter and Sous Chef Eric create the menu at the beginning of every school year and customise it for the students at St. George’s School.

    In order to maintain our standards, we order the highest quality, fresh ingredients, and are always open to suggestions for future menus. Our ingredients are local and sustainable whenever possible. 

    With the exception of a few items, the food at the St. George’s School Kitchen is made from scratch on a daily basis — from our homemade soups to salads and entrees. We generally to choose fresh meats, as opposed to frozen, and we prefer free-range and local food-options as much as we possibly can. Vegetables are brought in fresh, cleaned, peeled, and chopped — ready for cooking immediately upon their arrival.

  • Is there a meal plan geared towards athletes or other specialized activities (band, art, etc)?

    Yes, there is always a daily protein during Lunches. These will be lean cuts of meat (such as chicken breast, beef, turkey, fish, etc) that will be lightly seasoned. We are also very excited this year to continue offering our Educational Dining Program — the Powering Performance Meal Program. Click here to learn more.
      
    The Powering Performance Program helps the boys to easily identify our menu items. It is not only for athletes, but also for other students involved in specialized activities. This program includes four primary pillars to guide each boy’s different health and wellness goals, actively acknowledging that every boy is unique, and may require different dietary needs. 

    This program helps our students to easily identify foods that they should be eating, and that will help them with one of four goals. The four pillars of the Powering Performance program are:

    1. To Strengthen – Great for athletes to grow and fortify.  

    2. To Focus – Great for those in Academic Clubs or Programs,
    such as Band or Math Club, to sharpen minds and ensure they have the mental endurance to succeed.  

    3. To Sustain – To help sustain your energy level throughout the day’s demands — no more afternoon naps or cravings!  

    4. To Recover – Great after a hard workout, competition, or mentally challenging activity. Mental and physical recovery is essential to sustained success.
